There is more than pride at stake in a Man Utd vs Liverpool live match as the two clubs have true animosity towards each other. This is revealed for the world to see whenever the two sets of players go head to head against each other. There is equal parts envy, jealousy, dislike and an intense desire to upstage each other because of the history of success and failure between the two clubs. It is widely known that before the modern rise of Manchester United, their model to copy and overtake was that of Liverpool's. The latter was the most successful club in English football then, sweeping all aside both at home and in Europe in general. While Old Trafford could only bask in the adulation and sympathy of the public due to their tragic past, Liverpool were reveling in their glory as the club continued to build on success every year. The Busby era was remembered for its potential, but the Shankly rule had every team, including Manchester United, eating out of Liverpool's hands.

That slowly changed in the 1990's as decay and complacency started to set in at Anfield while a young but determined manager pushed Manchester United to the top. Alex Ferguson changed the course of English football after promoting a number of young but vastly talented players from the youth ranks to the senior team. Many doubted the wisdom of such a move but not Ferguson. He was promptly justified in his selection when United lifted their first of many titles since then, while relegating Liverpool to the role of also rans. This run of success has not abated a decade into the new century. Despite a moment of glory in winning their fifth European Cup in 2005, Liverpool have since then been beset by poor results and continue to play catch up on the team they love to hate. And the signs are pointing to more pain for the Anfield faithful, with no end in sight to their increasing problems while Man Utd are as healthy and successful as ever.
